Leander Green Newman died on Apr 2, 1933 at Nordheim, DeWitt County, Texas, at age 83, death certificate says he was born May 23, 1847 and was 85 yrs, 10 months and 9 days old. Informant was John Newman of Yorktown (Leander's son.)
     The 1900 Federal Census enumerated him as head of household on Jun 25, 1900 Atascosa County, Texas. He , who resides on a farm near town, was the first white child born in Yorktown more that 88 years ago. On the occasion of his recent birthday, he entertained his family and friends with an old fashioned barbecue and cowboy ??? was also on the menu.
His parents lived in a little house ? the creek, near where high-? ? crosses the stream. Mr Newman does not remember jut when he learned to ride, but at the age of 15 he was ne of the best ? this part of the country. He was often allowed to go on the ? roundup in the spring before he was 12 years of age.
To him, while he was a child ?hing was more fascinating than ?lour days and nights out on the range, just to hear the cowboys sing to the cattle to quiet them when the weather becme stormy.
Food cooked over the camp fire and smell of boiling coffee and a hard days work was all the stimulus a man eeds for his appetite.
Mr. Newman drove catle overland to Kansas City, before he was ? years old. in 1937 at Blanche West Creppon, Yorktown, DeWitt County.

     Oren Adelbert Rice was born on Jul 8, 1855 at DeWitt County, Texas. He married Mary Alice Hodges, daughter of Daniel (Progenitor) Hodges and Mary Wheelace, on May 13, 1875 at Goliad County. Oren Adelbert Rice died on Jan 25, 1925 at Yoakum, DeWitt County, Texas, at age 69 [died of pneumonia; informant S. C. Parker; death certificate no 1348 or 01112]. He was buried at Alexander Cemetery, DeWitt County, military style by the KKK per Mildred Parker Reinhardt. Mildred said she remembered it. She was about 6 yrs old when he died. Obituary from the Cuero Record: "Crossenville, Jan. 27. The death angel visited the Rice home taking away the beloved father and grandfather. Mr. Rice was laid to rest in the Alexander Cemetery Monday afternoon, Jan 26, at 4 o'clock."

Jesse James Rice died on Dec 15, 1949 at Yoakum at age 64 of heart attack; death certificate no 62754; informant Mrs. Agnes Kelley, daughter. Per Kraig Rice: Jesse James Rice had a continuous painful heart attack that lasted for three days. He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Yoakum.

Then they built a new house next to their old house. They had to transfer everything from the old to the new house. They put the trunk on a bonfire they had going to burn up trash. That was an immeasurable loss. He served during World War I serial # 1832801; served on the U.S.S. Georgia. He was an electrician.
